What is Automist’s UL Listing?

Automist is UL-listed under UL 2167A, the Outline of Investigation for Targeting Water Mist System Units for One- and Two-Family Dwellings for Fire Protection Service (UL LLC, Edition 1, July 8, 2024). Automist is the world’s first targeted residential water mist fire protection system to achieve third-party certification under this standard.

The listing can be independently verified under File Number EX29276 on the UL Product iQ database, product category Water Mist Residential System Units, Targeted Discharge (product code ZDSE). The listed model numbers are AP09 and AP12.

What does the listing cover?

The UL certification covers the complete Automist system as an integrated assembly, not individual parts in isolation. This includes the spray head, pump unit, controller, valves, and detection components. To achieve the listing, the system was evaluated across three areas:

• Fire performance. The system passed 17 defined full-scale fire tests across a range of residential fire scenarios, including upholstered furniture fires, cooking oil fires, and fires with physical obstructions between the nozzle and the fuel, in both small-room and large-room configurations. In each test the system had to prevent flashover conditions and maintain tenable temperatures for occupant escape while operating at minimum design pressure.
• Mechanical and hydraulic reliability. Pumps completed a 24-hour continuous endurance test at rated conditions, and all pressurized components withstood hydrostatic testing at twice the maximum system pressure.
• Long-term durability. All polymeric functional parts passed 180-day accelerated aging tests and still met hydraulic performance and strength requirements afterward. Control and detection components are additionally tested to UL 985, UL 864, and UL 268, and every production unit undergoes hydraulic performance and leakage testing before leaving the factory.
  

Why does it matter for AHJ approval?

Systems listed under UL 2167A are installed in accordance with NFPA 750, the Standard on Water Mist Fire Protection Systems, and the manufacturer’s Design, Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual (DIOM). The listing gives Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) and insurers an independent, recognized basis for accepting Automist as an alternative to an NFPA 13D sprinkler system under IFC/CFC §904.11, where approved by the AHJ.
