New Jensen Hughes Studies Strengthen the Technical Evidence for Automist

Independent engineering reports, UL certification and supporting technical resources for authorities evaluating Automist in one- and two-family dwellings.

Plumis has published two new independent engineering studies by Jensen Hughes to support Authorities Having Jurisdiction, fire protection engineers and other code professionals evaluating Automist as an alternative residential fire suppression system.

The first study is a detailed equivalency analysis comparing NFPA 13D residential sprinkler systems, NFPA 750 residential water mist systems and the Automist system. Jensen Hughes concluded that NFPA 13D and NFPA 750 have the same underlying residential life-safety intent, and that Automist meets or exceeds the other applicable NFPA 750 requirements assessed for a water mist system in a one- or two-family dwelling, subject to identified site-specific requirements. The report further concludes that Automist meets the intent of NFPA 13D and NFPA 750 to prevent flashover in the room of fire origin and improve occupants’ ability to escape or be evacuated.

The second study is an engineering judgement covering additional Automist fire testing with ceiling heights up to 18 feet. Jensen Hughes found the testing comparable to the relevant UL 2167A fire testing and concluded that it demonstrated the system’s capability to meet the residential life-safety intent of NFPA 750 in spaces greater than 8 feet high. The report recommends additional precautions for higher-ceiling applications, including reduced detector spacing and/or system redundancy.

This page brings together the principal certification, engineering and technical documents available to support an AHJ review.

Part of our association’s mission statement is to promote fire protection systems to save lives and property. Having fire suppression systems installed in as many homes as possible, installed by licensed contractors, and inspected by code officials is an important part of achieving our industry’s mission. Independent engineering validation of listed low-flow systems can help increase the number of protected homes built while considering water resources.
