What information is available to support an AHJ review of Automist?

Plumis provides a comprehensive set of UL certification, independent engineering analysis, fire-test evidence, design documentation and technical information to support an AHJ reviewing Automist.

If Automist is being considered as an alternative to an NFPA 13D residential sprinkler system, we recommend starting with three documents:

  • Plumis Automist AHJ Submission Package
  • Jensen Hughes Automist Equivalency Report
  • UL NFPA 13D Equivalence Letter

Together, these explain what Automist is, the code and standards framework under which it is designed, and the independent evidence available to support the AHJ’s evaluation.

Is there a single document an AHJ should start with?

Yes. The Plumis Automist AHJ Submission Package is designed as the starting point for plan review.

It provides an overview of Automist, applicable codes and standards, UL certification, the relationship between NFPA 750 and NFPA 13D, supporting technical evidence and the principal information an AHJ may need during review.

Is there an independent comparison with NFPA 13D?

Yes. Jensen Hughes independently compared Automist, NFPA 750 residential water mist systems and NFPA 13D residential sprinkler systems.

The report examines the purpose of the standards, system components, water supply, pumps, piping and fittings, hydraulic calculations, acceptance, inspection and maintenance requirements, and the respective UL fire-test requirements.

The analysis found that NFPA 13D and NFPA 750 share the same residential life-safety intent and evaluated how Automist addresses the applicable requirements.

Has UL addressed the comparison with NFPA 13D?

Yes. In February 2026, UL Solutions issued a letter specifically addressing Automist and its consideration as an alternative to an NFPA 13D residential sprinkler system.

UL noted that the two technologies have different attributes and design requirements, but confirmed that the residential provisions of NFPA 13D and NFPA 750 have the same overall life-safety purpose.

UL states that an AHJ evaluating a targeted water mist system as an alternative to NFPA 13D can consider their purposes for meeting the life-safety requirements of the standards as equivalent.

What fire-test information is available?

Two principal documents are available.

UL 2167A Fire Test Letter Report

UL Solutions’ underlying fire-test documentation records the residential fire-testing programme conducted on the Automist targeted water mist system.

The testing included different residential fuel packages, fire positions, nozzle locations, obstructions and room configurations.

Full report available on request

Jensen Hughes 18 ft Fire Test Judgement Report

Jensen Hughes independently assessed Automist fire testing conducted with an 18 ft ceiling against the UL 2167A testing conducted with ceilings up to 8 ft.

The report considers the effect of ceiling height on smoke detection, system activation and measured temperatures.

What UL certification documents are available?

UL 2167A Certificate of Compliance

The UL Certificate of Compliance confirms certification of the Automist AP09 and AP12 as Water Mist Residential System Units – Targeted Discharge under UL 2167A.

What design and installation information is available?

Automist DIOM Manual

The Design, Installation, Operation and Maintenance Manual is the manufacturer’s principal technical document for Automist.

It defines the system’s design limits and requirements for spray-head positioning, smoke detection, water supply, electrical power, high-pressure distribution, commissioning, acceptance, inspection, testing and maintenance.

Automist Water Supply Connection Schematic

This drawing shows how Automist connects to the domestic cold-water supply, including isolation, backflow protection, pressure control, pump connections and the high-pressure distribution system.

It also identifies the required pump inlet conditions and considerations where more than one Automist system may operate concurrently.

DIOM Pump Calculations

These supporting hydraulic calculations document pipe friction losses and the pressure and flow basis of the pre-engineered Automist system.

Do I need to submit every document?

Not necessarily. The documents required will depend on the project and the questions raised by the reviewing jurisdiction.

For an initial review, we normally recommend starting with:

  • AHJ Submission Package
  • Jensen Hughes Equivalency Report
  • UL NFPA 13D Equivalence Letter
  • UL 2167A Certificate
  • Automist DIOM

The remaining technical documents allow the reviewer to examine particular aspects of the system in more detail where required.

Can Plumis help with an active AHJ review?

Yes. If you are an AHJ, fire protection engineer, architect or contractor reviewing Automist, send us the project address, jurisdiction and any questions raised during plan review.

We can identify the relevant documentation and provide technical information to support the review.
