Automist Wins 2025 IIDA WestEdge Award, Highlighting a New Approach to Fire Sprinklers in California Homes

Automist has been named the winner in the Electronics and Technology category at the 2025 IIDA / WestEdge Design Fair Product Awards in Santa Monica, California.
Presented at one of the West Coast’s leading architecture and interior design events, the award reflects a shift in how fire protection is being integrated into the home, not just as a code requirement, but as part of the overall design.
Traditional fire sprinkler systems are typically based on ceiling-mounted pipework and higher water demand, which can influence ceiling design, and construction. By contrast, newer approaches are being developed to complement the home, with more discreet components and a different visual impact.
Water mist systems operate at lower flow rates, using fine droplets to control fire development, and can offer greater flexibility in how fire protection is incorporated into residential projects.
This is particularly relevant in California, where fire sprinklers have been required in new homes since 2011, but where implementation has highlighted challenges, especially in WUI areas and hillside properties.
California Fire Code Section 904.11 permits listed water mist systems in residential applications, providing a defined pathway for alternative technologies evaluated under standards such as UL 2167A.
As wildfire risk, housing delivery, and design expectations continue to converge, there is also increasing focus on long-term resilience and insurability. Fire protection systems that can intervene earlier in a fire event, limit damage, and reduce the likelihood of secondary losses such as water damage or system leaks may offer broader value over the life of a property.
In that context, the discussion is shifting beyond upfront cost alone, toward how fire protection contributes to overall building performance, risk reduction, and the long-term viability of homes in high-risk environments..
