Can Automist help protect home art collections and valuable possessions?
A home is more than a building. It can hold paintings, antiques, sculpture, photography, books, heirlooms, design pieces, family archives, and objects that are impossible to replace.
When protecting these spaces, the question is not only “How do we suppress the fire?” It is also “How do we reduce the damage caused by the suppression itself?”
Traditional fire sprinklers can be highly effective at controlling fire, but they discharge water from above and may release a large volume of water into the room. For homes with art, antiques, collectibles, or delicate interiors, that post incident water damage can be a major concern.
Automist is different. It is a UL Listed targeted water mist system that detects fire early, locates the source, and directs water mist at the fire. That means it can help protect people, property, and the things that matter most, while using far less water than traditional sprinklers.
Why are art collections vulnerable in a fire?
Art and collectibles can be damaged by more than flame.
Heat, smoke, soot, humidity, and direct water exposure can all cause permanent damage. Works on paper, canvas, textiles, rare books, archives, musical instruments, antiques, electronics, and design furniture may be especially sensitive.
For valuable interiors, the fire protection strategy should consider:
- where the most precious assets are located
- where a fire is most likely to start
- how quickly the system activates
- how much water is discharged
- whether water can be directed away from sensitive items
- what the room looks like after the incident
Automist was designed for domestic spaces where safety, design, and contents all matter.

How does Automist protect differently from sprinklers?
Traditional sprinklers rely on heat activation. Each sprinkler head contains a thermal element that must reach its activation temperature before water is released.
Automist uses a ceiling mounted smoke detector and a wall mounted infrared sensor to detect and locate the fire early. It then turns the sprayhead toward the fire and directs high pressure water mist at the source.
Independent testing published in Fire Safety Journal found Automist activates 2 to 14 times faster than concealed residential sprinklers, because it does not need to wait for heat to build up at the ceiling.
That faster activation can be important for valuable possessions. The earlier the fire is attacked, the less time it has to grow, spread smoke, generate soot, and damage the room.
Can Automist direct water away from precious assets?
Yes. One of the advantages of Automist is that the sprayhead location can be considered as part of the room design.
In a room with a valuable painting, sculpture, display cabinet, archive, or collectible object, the head can be positioned to target likely fire sources while helping to direct the water mist away from the precious asset.
For example, if the most valuable artwork is on one wall, the Automist head may be located and aimed so that its spray pattern prioritizes the likely fire risk area and avoids directing water at the artwork wherever possible.
This does not mean any fire suppression system can guarantee that a valuable item will never be affected during a fire. But Automist gives the designer and installer more control over where suppression is delivered.
The principle is simple:
Target the flames. Avoid the flood. Protect what matters.
Water damage after an incident
A typical two head residential sprinkler discharge can release around 240 gallons of water over the 10 minute minimum required by NFPA 13D.
Automist uses 2.37 gpm, or approximately 24 gallons over the same period.
That is roughly a 90% reduction in water use, delivered as targeted high pressure mist rather than water falling from above.
For homes with fine art, antiques, heirlooms, collectible objects, or bespoke interiors, that difference can be significant.
What types of possessions can Automist help protect?
Automist may be relevant for homeowners looking to protect:
- paintings and works on paper
- sculpture and ceramics
- antiques and heirlooms
- rare books and personal archives
- photography collections
- musical instruments
- wine rooms and display spaces
- collectible furniture and design objects
- family photographs and records
- high value interiors and finishes
This is why the conversation is not only about art collections. It is about protecting the things that matter to you.
Is Automist suitable for high end interiors?
Automist may be relevant for homeowners looYes. Automist avoids the need for ceiling pipework and conventional sprinkler heads in every room. The sprayheads are wall mounted and connected by flexible hose to a compact pump.
This makes Automist suitable for homes where the appearance of the interior is important, including architect designed homes, renovations, luxury residences, historic properties, and spaces with valuable contents.
Can Automist guarantee that art will not be damaged?
No fire suppression system can guarantee that valuable possessions will not be damaged during a fire.
Automist is designed to reduce risk by detecting fire early, targeting the source, and using significantly less water than traditional sprinklers. That can help reduce the severity of fire, smoke, soot, and water damage, but it should be considered as part of a wider protection strategy.

Yes — Automist can be used as an alternative to an NFPA 13D fire sprinkler system in domestic occupancies, where permitted by the local Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ). Automist is not an extinguishing system; it is a fire suppression system that is specifically designed and Listed for domestic use, meeting the intent of NFPA 13D sprinkler protection.
Learn morePossibly. While insurance discounts or “policy credits” are determined on a case-by-case basis, Automist has already been used successfully to secure coverage and lower premiums for high-value homes — especially in wildfire-prone areas and PPC 10 risk classifications where traditional coverage is increasingly difficult to obtain.
As insurers tighten underwriting criteria due to rising wildfire risk and water damage claims, automatic discounts for standard fire suppression systems are becoming less common. However, Automist stands out as an innovative loss mitigation solution — not only by reducing fire damage, but also by minimizing the risk of excessive water damage, which is a major cost concern for insurers.
